2026 Stigma and
Discrimination
Reduction Symposium
and Roundtable

In partnership with the Melbourne School of Psychological Sciences at the University of Melbourne, the National Mental Health Commission is supporting a Stigma and Discrimination
Reduction Symposium to be held in September 2026. The Symposium will convene diverse
perspectives to explore the personal, social and systemic impacts of stigma and discrimination and current perspectives on solutions and priorities.
An estimated four million people in Australia experience mental health-related stigma and
discrimination each year. Stigma and discrimination can limit access to care, employment,
education, and community participation, presenting a significant barrier for accessing mental health support and participating fully in society.
The Productivity Commission’s 2025 review of the National Mental Health and Suicide
Prevention Agreement highlighted the need for coordinated and collaborative action to reduce mental health stigma and discrimination as a priority.
The Symposium will provide a platform for knowledge exchange, collaboration, and systemic change, ultimately strengthening Australia’s commitment to reducing mental health stigma and discrimination.
